Percentages, monetary amounts, and unit prices help customers judge value without manual calculation.

The guidance also addresses “from” pricing accuracy, mandatory cost disclosure under UK consumer law, accessibility requirements beyond color alone, and consistency across category pages, product pages, and the basket. A recommended ten-second mobile test checks whether pricing, savings, and conditions are immediately clear.

Price is often one of the first things a customer looks for on a product page. If they cannot work out what they will pay, they are unlikely to spend much time studying the images, description or reviews.

A discounted product introduces a few more questions. What was the original price? What is the new price? How much am I saving? Does the offer apply automatically, or do I need a code?

The page should answer these questions without making the customer calculate, search or add the product to their basket.

Make the current price the most prominent number

The price the customer will pay should be the easiest number to find.

Use a larger size, stronger weight or more prominent position for the current price. Supporting information, such as the previous price and saving, can be visually quieter.

A simple sale price block might look like this:

£79
Was £99
Save £20 (20%)

This order works because the first number answers the customer’s main question. The other two explain why the offer may be worthwhile.

Avoid giving the original price and discounted price equal visual weight. When both numbers look equally important, customers have to pause and identify which one is current.

The same principle applies on category pages. Customers should not need to open every product page to find the real selling price.

Keep the discount next to the price

Place discount information directly beside or underneath the current price.

Do not separate the offer from the price with product images, delivery information or a long description. A promotional banner at the top of the website may introduce a sale, but it should not be the only explanation of the discount on the product page.

Baymard’s product-page testing found that customers struggled to understand offers when promotional information appeared far away from the product price. Some participants added products to their basket simply to find out whether a discount would apply.

If a product has a discount, keep the following information together:

Current price

Previous price

Amount or percentage saved

Any conditions attached to the offer

Offer end date, when relevant

Repeating the same promotion in several different places can be just as confusing. Customers may wonder whether they are looking at several discounts or different descriptions of one offer.

Show the actual saving

A crossed-out original price suggests that a product has been reduced, but it still leaves the customer to calculate the value of the offer.

Show the saving as an amount, a percentage or both:

Discount information

Example

Current and previous price

£79, was £99

Amount saved

Save £20

Percentage saved

Save 20%

Amount and percentage

Save £20 (20%)

The best format depends on the product.

A percentage can make a large relative discount easy to recognise. A monetary amount is often more useful for expensive products because it shows exactly how much stays in the customer’s pocket.

When there is enough space, showing both removes the need for mental arithmetic.

Check the calculation carefully. An incorrect percentage or inconsistent saving creates doubt about the whole offer, not just the price label.

Explain offer conditions immediately

A discount is not clear if the customer only discovers its conditions in the basket.

If the offer requires a promotional code, minimum order value, subscription or membership, say so next to the price.

For example:

£79 with code SAVE20
Enter the code in the basket. Offer ends 30 September.

Or:

£15 each when you buy three
Single item price: £18

Avoid vague labels such as “Special price”, “Member benefit” or “Extra saving available” without an explanation. These labels attract attention but do not tell the customer what they will actually pay.

If the offer only applies to selected colours or sizes, update the price and message when the customer changes the selected option.

Use “from” prices honestly

A “from” price is useful when a product has several configurations, but it can become misleading when most available options cost more.

The lowest price should correspond to a real option that the customer can select. That option should not be unavailable, hidden or dependent on an unusual combination of choices.

Once the customer selects a size, material, capacity or other variant, replace the “from” price with the actual price for that configuration.

For example:

From £120

After the customer selects a larger size:

Selected size: Large
£145

If the final price cannot be calculated until the customer provides more information, explain how the price will be determined. Do not leave the headline price unchanged while extra mandatory costs quietly accumulate.

Show unit prices when quantities differ

Total price alone is not always enough to judge value.

When products are sold in different weights, volumes, pack sizes or subscription quantities, show a consistent unit price alongside the total:

£6.50 per 100 g

£1.20 per item

£2.40 per litre

£9.50 per delivery

This is particularly useful on category pages where customers compare several products.

Baymard’s testing found that customers had to stop and calculate value themselves when products had different quantities but only displayed the package price. A visible unit price makes comparison faster and reduces the chance of customers dismissing the better-value option.

The unit should remain consistent within a product category. Comparing one product per 100 g and another per kilogram simply gives the customer another calculation to make.

Include unavoidable costs early

The headline price should not become more expensive without warning as the customer moves through the checkout.

For UK stores, the Competition and Markets Authority says prices must be clear, complete and accurate. The displayed total should normally include fees, taxes and other charges the customer cannot avoid. Hiding mandatory costs until later in the journey is known as drip pricing and may break consumer law.

This can include:

Mandatory delivery charges

Booking or administration fees

VAT

Required service charges

Other unavoidable payments

If a mandatory charge cannot yet be calculated because it depends on the customer’s location or requirements, explain how it will be calculated. Place that information near the price and give it comparable prominence.

Optional costs, such as next-day delivery or gift wrapping, can be shown separately because the customer can choose whether to pay them.

Keep a visible running total in the basket. When quantity, delivery method or another paid option changes, update the total immediately.

Do not rely on colour alone

Sale prices are often red or green, while original prices appear in grey. Colour can help customers scan the page, but it should not carry the whole meaning.

Use text and formatting as well:

Add labels such as “Was”, “Now” and “Save”

Strike through the original price

Use a different weight or size for the current price

Keep sufficient contrast between every price and its background

WCAG 2.2 requires information conveyed through colour to be available through another visual method. A customer who cannot distinguish the colours should still be able to identify the current price and the saving.

A pale grey original price may look tasteful on a design screen but become difficult to read on a phone, in bright light or for someone with reduced vision.

Keep pricing consistent throughout the journey

The same product should not appear to have different prices on the category page, product page and basket.

Common causes of inconsistency include:

A discount applied only after adding the product to the basket

A category page showing the lowest variant price without saying “from”

A promotion banner showing a percentage that does not apply to every product

A product page showing prices without VAT while the basket includes it

Cached prices that have not been updated across the website

Different rounding rules for unit prices and totals

Test the complete buying journey rather than reviewing the product page in isolation.

Start on the category page, choose a variant, add it to the basket and continue far enough to see delivery charges and the final total. Repeat the journey on mobile because long price labels and promotional messages often wrap differently on a narrow screen.

Run a ten-second price check

Open one of your product pages on a phone and look at it for ten seconds.

Can you answer these questions without scrolling around or doing arithmetic?

What will I pay for the selected product?

Was there a previous price?

How much am I saving?

Does the discount have any conditions?

Will any unavoidable costs be added later?

Is this offer genuinely better than the available alternatives?

If any answer is unclear, simplify the price area before adding another badge, banner or promotional message.

Clear pricing does not need to look plain. It needs a strong hierarchy, accurate numbers and enough context for the customer to make a decision.

Sources and further reading

CMA: Providing clear and accurate information about prices

Baymard Institute: How to display price discounts on the product page

Baymard Institute: Display price per unit for products sold in different quantities

W3C: Understanding WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.4.1, Use of Color

Customers should quickly understand what they will pay, what they save and whether the offer is worthwhile.

Effective pricing display helps customers quickly understand what they will pay, ensuring the current price is visually dominant while discount details, conditions, and savings information remain adjacent rather than scattered across the page or hidden until checkout.
